Sanding is the process of smoothing and abrading a surface with sandpaper or abrasive tools so paint can adhere properly and the finished coat looks smooth. It is the single most skipped step in painting — and the most common reason paint jobs look amateurish or fail early through peeling.

Why Sanding Matters

Paint bonds mechanically to microscopic scratches in the surface. Glossy, slick, or previously painted surfaces give new paint nothing to grip. Sanding:

  • Creates tooth — fine scratches that paint locks into
  • Levels imperfections — dried drips, brush marks, patched areas, raised grain
  • Removes failing paint — feathering the edges of chipped or peeling paint so repairs disappear
  • Smooths between coats — knocking down dust nibs and raised fibers for a glass-like final coat

The working rule: start with the finest grit that does the job, and never jump more than one grit class at a time when working up to a finer finish.

How to Sand Before Painting

  1. Clean first. Sanding a dirty or greasy surface grinds contamination into the substrate. Wash with a degreaser and let dry — see Surface Preparation.
  2. Repair before sanding. Fill holes and cracks (Drywall Repair, wood filler, caulk where appropriate) and let repairs cure fully.
  3. Choose the right grit from the chart above. For previously painted walls in good condition, a light pass with 180–220 grit is usually all that is needed.
  4. Sand with the grain on wood. Cross-grain scratches telegraph through paint, especially with oil-based enamels.
  5. Keep the block moving with light, even pressure. Let the abrasive do the work.
  6. Feather the edges of any chipped paint until you cannot feel the ridge with your fingertips.
  7. Vacuum, then tack. Vacuum dust, then wipe with a damp cloth (latex) or tack cloth (oil). Dust left behind ruins adhesion and texture.
  8. Prime bare spots. Any sanding that exposes bare substrate needs primer before topcoat.

Sanding Between Coats

For furniture, doors, trim, and cabinets, a light between-coat sanding separates acceptable results from professional ones:

  1. Let the first coat dry fully (not just to the touch — respect the recoat window on the can).
  2. Sand very lightly with 220–320 grit, just enough to dull the sheen and remove nibs.
  3. Remove every trace of dust.
  4. Apply the next coat.

Skip between-coat sanding on ordinary flat wall paint — it is unnecessary on low-sheen finishes.

Common Mistakes

  • Skipping sanding on glossy surfaces — new paint sheets off semi-gloss and gloss without a scuff sand; no bonding primer fully substitutes for tooth
  • Using too coarse a grit — 60–80 grit scratches show straight through paint on smooth surfaces
  • Sanding without a block — fingertip pressure creates waves and grooves in soft wood and drywall mud
  • Not cleaning up dust — the most common cause of gritty, poorly bonded topcoats
  • Pressing harder instead of changing paper — worn sandpaper burnishes instead of cutting; replace it
  • Power-sanding drywall patches aggressively — orbit sanders dig through feathered mud fast; hand-sand patches with fine grit

Safety

  • Test old paint for lead first. Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint; dry-sanding it releases toxic dust. Use a certified test kit before sanding any pre-1978 surface.
  • Wear an N95 or better dust mask — drywall and paint dust are lung irritants even when lead-free.
  • Wear safety glasses, especially when sanding overhead.
  • Ventilate the work area and isolate it from living spaces with plastic sheeting for big jobs.
  • Use sanders with dust collection or hook a shop vacuum to the tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need to sand before painting?

If the surface is glossy, chalky, flaking, rough, or patched — yes. The exception is a clean, sound, previously painted matte wall being repainted with similar latex paint; there a wash and spot-priming usually suffice. When in doubt, a five-minute scuff sand is cheap insurance against repainting the whole room later.

What grit sandpaper should I use before painting walls?

Use 120–150 grit for walls with minor imperfections and 180–220 grit for a light scuff on previously painted walls in good shape. Coarser than 100 grit will leave scratches that show through standard wall paint.

Can I paint over old paint without sanding?

Over flat or eggshell paint in sound condition, yes — clean it and go. Over semi-gloss, gloss, or oil-based paint, scuff-sand with 180–220 grit and use a bonding primer, or the new coat can peel off in sheets.

Should I sand between coats of paint?

On trim, doors, and cabinets — yes, a very light pass with 220–320 grit between coats levels dust nibs and gives the final coat a smooth, hard feel. On flat wall paint it is not needed.

How do I know when I have sanded enough?

Run your bare hand over the surface. If you can feel ridges, chip edges, or roughness, keep going. The surface should feel uniformly smooth and look uniformly dull, with no shiny spots remaining on previously glossy paint.

Is wet sanding better than dry sanding?

Wet sanding (with waterproof paper and a little soapy water) controls dust and produces an ultra-smooth finish on high-gloss surfaces, which makes it popular for cabinet and furniture work. For general prep, dry sanding is faster and fine grits handle the finish work.
