Paint Cracking is the splitting of a dried paint film into visible fissures, ranging from hairline surface crazing to deep "alligatoring" that exposes bare wood or old paint layers. Cracking is a mechanical failure: the paint film has become too brittle, too thick, or too poorly bonded to move with the surface beneath it. Identifying the crack pattern tells you the cause, and the cause determines whether you can scrape and spot-repair or whether the coating has to come off entirely.

Types of Paint Cracking

Alligatoring is the classic pattern of deep, interlocking rectangular cracks that looks like reptile hide. It almost always means many accumulated layers of old oil-based paint that have grown brittle with age and can no longer expand and contract with the substrate, or a rigid coating applied over a more flexible one (for example, an alkyd enamel over a soft primer that never fully cured). How to Fix Cracked Paint

For surface crazing/checking confined to the topcoat:

  1. Sand the cracked area with 100–120-grit until the crack pattern disappears and edges are feathered, finishing with 180–220-grit.
  2. Dust off, wipe clean, and spot-apply a quality primer.

When Full Stripping Is Necessary

Spot repairs stop working when the failure is in the accumulated paint body itself. Plan on removing the coating down to bare substrate when:

  • Alligatoring covers a broad area — the remaining "sound" paint is just as brittle and will crack next season.
  • Cracks penetrate through every layer to bare wood.
  • Paint buildup is so thick that trim profiles and siding edges have lost their crisp lines.
  • Every previous spot repair has re-cracked within a year or two.
